Nominations are now open for the 2021 Port Macquarie-Hastings Australia Day awards. Do you know a local person who has contributed to the community and deserves to be recognised for their achievements?

Australia Day is a day for all Australians, no matter where our personal stories began. It is the day to celebrate our diversity and the values that we share as an Australian community.

Categories on offer for 2021 Australia Day Award categories include:

  • Young Citizen of the Year (16 - 30 years)
  • Citizen of the Year (31 - 65 years)
  • Senior Citizen of the Year (65+ years)
  • Community Group of the Year
  • Environmental Citizen of the Year

Please note: No self-nominations will be accepted.

There are many deserving locals within our community who continue to make a difference, going above and beyond, whether it be through their efforts during last year’s bushfires or the current Coronavirus crisis. Of course, you may have a special person already in mind for a nomination - so please jump on line and put them forward for this prestigious award.

YOUNG CITIZEN OF THE YEAR (16 – 30 years)
The Young Citizen of the Year Award is open to Australian Citizens aged between 16 years and 30 years of age who are permanent residents of the Port Macquarie-Hastings Local Government Area.
This Award is designed to recognise the contributions and achievements of young people over the age of 16 years in the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council area. It will be judged on community involvement, volunteer contributions made to the Port Macquarie-Hastings Community, with particular focus on the contribution over the preceding 12 months and/or sporting contributions /achievements during that period.

CITIZEN OF THE YEAR (31 – 65 years)
The Citizen of the Year Award is open to Australian Citizens aged between 31 years and 65 years of age who are permanent residents of the Port Macquarie-Hastings Local Government Area.
A fair go, desire for prosperity with a share for all, participation in sport, cultural diversity, the importance of strong community values and support systems and a keen sense that we have our own contribution to make in the community. This Award will be judged on contributions made to the Port Macquarie-Hastings Community, with particular focus on the volunteer contribution over the preceding 12 months and/or sporting contributions/achievements during that period.

SENIOR CITIZEN OF THE YEAR (65 years +)
The Senior Citizen of the Year (Male or Female) Award is open to all Australian Citizens aged 65 years+ who are permanent residents of the Port Macquarie-Hastings Local Government Area. A fair go, desire for prosperity with a share for all, participation in sport, cultural diversity, the importance of strong community values and support systems and a keen sense that we have our own contribution to make in the community. This Award will be judged on contributions made to the Port Macquarie-Hastings Community, with particular focus on the volunteer contribution over the preceding 12 months and/or sporting contributions/ achievements during that period.

COMMUNITY GROUP OF THE YEAR
The Community Group of the Year Award is designed to recognise the contributions and achievements of community groups based in the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council area. The Award will be judged on community involvement and strong community values demonstrated to the Port Macquarie-Hastings Community, with particular focus on the volunteer contribution and achievements within the community over the preceding 12 months.

ENVIROMENTAL CITIZEN OF THE YEAR (Open Age Group)
The Environmental Citizen of the Year is a new category introduced by the Australia Day Council of NSW. This award is designed to recognise outstanding efforts by individuals or organisations to preserve the environment reduce litter and improve recycling, or use the Return and Earn scheme in an innovative way to fundraise for a meaningful cause.

The 2021 NSW Environmental Citizen of the Year Award is sponsored by Return and Earn - the largest litter reduction program ever undertaken in NSW.

Judging of the Awards
Nominations successfully lodged online will be considered by the Judging Panel.
Following receipt of all nominations, the Judging Panel may determine that no nominee is suitable for an award in any of the categories listed above. The judging of candidates will be based on the information provided in and attached to the online nomination form. The Judging panel may wish to contact referees, and confirm Australian Citizenship. The decision of the Judging Panel will be final and with no correspondence being entered into. To ensure that the assessment of nominations can proceed, it is essential that all nominators seek the approval of the person they wish to nominate, prior to the on-line nomination being undertaken, to ensure the nominee is happy for the nomination to be made.

Duties of Award Recipients
Depending on the number of nominations received, all nominees or finalists from each category of the PMHC Australia Day Awards will be invited to attend the Official Program that will take place as part of the Australia Day Celebrations taking part on Australia Day 2021- Tuesday 26 January 2021 Further details will provided to nominators and award nominees in the lead up to Australia Day 2021. At this Official Program each recipient of a PMHC Australia Day Award will be invited to deliver their a short acceptance speech.
Award recipients may also be invited to take part in various official Port Macquarie- Hastings Council functions throughout 2021.

Nominations Open/Close
Online nominations will be open via Council’s website www.pmhc.nsw.gov.au/australiaday from Monday 21 September 2020 and be accepted until close of business on 30 November 2020.
